Kırık Kemer - The Broken
Aqueduct (Kovuk Kemer - The Hollow Aqueduct)
This İstanbul aqueduct
was built on an old Roman aqueduct foundation by Mimar Sinan between 1554-1562.
It’s an aqueduct that measures 35 m. in heigth and 408 m. in length. Its single
storey part bears 12 fountainheads, whereas the three storey main aqueduct has
4 in the first storey, 10 in the second and 21 in the third one. It’s known as
the Broken Aqueduct because of the 90 degrees turn of direction in its entrance.
